FAQs

Which module do I use?

528i currently offers laser modules that address or support:

  • Muscle and joint pain and stiffness
  • Arthritis pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Increased blood circulation

Each 528 5i Series Laser Module emits specific wavelengths of light that are selected for their unique therapeutic effects:

975nm – Deep infrared for enhanced blood flow and tissue penetration. Choose this module to enhance exclusion zone (EZ) water production and stimulate mitochondrial function while minimizing tissue heating. Its ability to reduce oxidative stress makes it ideal for supporting chronic tendon recovery, bone healing, and managing deep inflammation.

808nm – Mid-range near infrared for cellular regeneration and nerve health. Choose this for its proven benefits in supporting the gut microbiome, enhancing mitochondrial ATP production, boosting circulation through nitric oxide release, and promoting nerve and muscle recovery.

638nm – Visible red light for skin, inflammation, and surface-level support. Choose this to harness red light’s proven therapeutic benefits, particularly in tissue repair and inflammation reduction. Research shows that red light at this wavelength boosts mitochondrial ATP production, enhances collagen synthesis, and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α, accelerating wound healing, improving skin rejuvenation, and supporting muscle recovery in clinical applications.

What is a Preset?

A Preset is a defined sequence of laser settings designed to achieve a specific outcome. The 5i Series Laser Therapy Device comes preloaded with a minimum of 80 Presets across 8 categories, each expertly designed to work with a curated wavelength or combination of wavelengths. A single Laser Module can support a variety of Presets.

To use a Preset, simply select your desired module, insert it into the handset, and manually choose a Preset from the menu. You’ll then select which wavelength you’d like to activate (IR, Red, IR+Red). The system will automatically run a carefully curated sequence of frequencies tailored to that Preset’s intended effect.

Refer to Section 7 in the User Manual (linked above): Administering a Laser Therapy Session, for more information about running a Preset or a Program.

What is a Program?

Programs are only available through the 528i Mobile App. (Coming soon!)

A Program is an advanced, guided therapy session that uses carefully curated sets of frequencies and may include additional healing modalities like breathwork, meditation, or movement. Programs are designed to deliver a more comprehensive and personalized therapeutic experience.

The 528i Mobile App will feature a minimum of 15 Programs across 8 categories. Each Program is a timed, multi-step, interactive therapy session that may recommend specific Laser Modules, guide you through swapping modules during your session, and incorporate supportive activities to enhance outcomes.

The 5i Series Laser Therapy Device connects to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. Once connected, simply select a Program in the app, and the settings will be sent directly to your device. The app then guides you through each step of the session from start to finish, making it easy to follow and ensuring you get the best possible results.

Refer to Section 7 in the User Manual (linked above): Administering a Laser Therapy Session, for more information about running a Preset or a Program.

How long and how often should I use the device?

Q:  How long and how often should I use the device?

Therapy times can vary depending on the condition being treated, the treatment method, and your unique physical characteristics (such as skin pigmentation) and/or the power level that you select. Programs can range from just a few minutes to up to an hour.

Research shows that consistent use of the right light dosage leads to better results over time. With many light therapy solutions, it can be hard to know exactly how long your session should be or which settings to use.

That’s why, at 528i, we’ve created a library of Programs that guide you through the optimal therapy times and settings—ensuring you can easily stay on track with your wellness goals.

Tip: Presets are not guided by the app, but they do provide a Suggested Use. Since they don't have a built-in timer, you can choose the session duration based on your personal preferences.

Feature Highlight: You may set a timer if you'd like, giving you complete control over your session length.

Refer to Section 7 in the User Manual: Administering a Laser Therapy Session, for more information about modifying Presets.

How do I adjust the power level on my 528 5i Series device?

Your 528i device offers three adjustable power levels, allowing you to customize the laser intensity based on your comfort level and treatment area:

  • Intense (default) – Delivers full laser power and is suitable for most applications.
    Indicator: Full laser icon
  • Comfort – Uses 70% laser power, ideal for those sensitive to bright light or who prefer a gentler, more gradual treatment.
    Indicator: Half-filled laser icon
  • Gentle – Operates at 30% laser power, recommended for use on the face (near the eyes) or for individuals with sensitive skin.
    Indicator: Unfilled laser icon

You can adjust the power level by going to Settings > Control Center on your device.

Note: This setting applies to all Presets globally and remains active until manually changed.

Why did my device display an error code?

Your 5i Series Laser Therapy Device is engineered with built-in safeguards that detect and alert you to potential errors to ensure safe and effective operation. These alerts may indicate issues such as low battery, high temperature, obstructions in internal connectors (dust/debris), external electromagnetic interference (EMC), or moisture-related electrical shorts.

Some errors can be easily resolved by following the on-screen instructions, which may include restarting the session, power cycling the device, ensuring proper air flow or charging the battery. For a comprehensive list of error codes, descriptions, and troubleshooting steps, please refer to Section 9 of the User Manual (linked above). If you cannot resolve the error, contact our support team via the form on this page.

How do I prevent my system from overheating? (Error 10114)

The 5i Series is designed with a patent-pending airflow system and a curved front to support optimal cooling during high-performance use. For more guidance, refer to your user manual.

If your 5i Series laser therapy device displays Error 10114, it means the laser diodes have exceeded the operating temperature. The system will automatically stop the session to protect internal components, and you’ll see this error message on the screen.

We recommend to not power down the device. The internal fan will continue to run to cool the system. Simply allow the device to remain on and let it cool down completely before starting another session.

To help prevent this from occurring in the future:

  • Keep the front of the device unobstructed to maintain proper airflow.
  • Avoid pressing the unit directly against the skin during use.
  • Operate the device in environments below 30°C (86°F) and ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Make sure the fan in the battery remains unblocked and fully functional.
How do I clean my device?

While 5i Series handsets and laser modules are designed to be rugged, good care and cleaning will maximize the life of your device. If multiple users use the same device, we recommend cleaning any parts of the device that come into skin contact between each use with alcohol-based wipes (>70 IPA).

While the LCD Screen on the Laser Therapy Handset is scratch-resistant, avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals for cleaning. To clean the screen, wipe gently with a microfiber cloth. If needed, you can moisten the cloth with a solution that is equal parts water and isopropyl alcohol. Screen cleaning wipes that are explicitly labeled safe for laptop and smartphone screens are also safe for your handset screen.

You can use compressed air dusters designed for computers to clean dust from the D-pad on the handset or the connectors on the handset or laser modules. To avoid damage to sensitive components of the device, especially around the connectors, do not use a pressure higher than the 30 PSI commonly recommended for consumer electronics.

Traveling with my 528i Laser Therapy Device

If you’re traveling by air with your 528i Laser Therapy Device, be sure to check the laser safety regulations for both your departure and destination locations. Class 3R lasers are generally allowed in both carry-on and checked luggage by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), but restrictions may apply in certain parts of Canada and the European Union.

If you’re using the device under the guidance of a licensed medical provider, it’s a good idea to request a note from your provider explaining the purpose and intended use of the device prior to travel.

Tip: While 528i Laser Therapy Devices are designed to be durable and travel-safe, it's always best to store the handset and modules in a protective container. You can use the original boxes your product arrived in, or visit 528innovations.com for travel and storage accessories.

Are there contraindications of use?

Laser therapy is considered a very safe form of therapy with little to no side effects. Never discontinue use of medications prescribed by your doctor, but report improvements. Always consult with your doctor and follow the below considerations:

  • Eyes: Never direct the laser into the eyes, as it can cause serious damage or injury.
  • Pregnancy: Avoid using laser therapy on the abdominal or lower back area during pregnancy.
  • Cancer: Do not use the device over known or suspected cancerous lesions or tumors.
  • Active Infection: Avoid using the device on areas with active infections, as the therapy might exacerbate the condition.
  • Thyroid Gland: Do not use the laser over the thyroid gland to avoid potential thyroid dysfunction.

  • Epilepsy: Use caution in individuals with epilepsy, especially if the device emits pulsing light that could potentially trigger seizures.
  • Bleeding Disorders: Avoid using the device on areas with recent or active bleeding, as laser therapy may affect blood clotting.
  • Individuals with a history of active seizure disorders should only use this device under the guidance and direction of a qualified healthcare provider, particularly when applying it to the head.
Do 528i Lasers have clearance by the FDA?

528 Innovations devices are registered with the FDA and have obtained 510(k) clearance. The FDA classifies lasers based on their safety, from Class 1 (Low power output: eye exposure safe) to Class 4 (Reserve caution: strict safety protocols due to risk of eye harm). 528 Innovations revolutionized the industry with a Class 3R laser, traditionally thought to be lower in power, and through our patent pending technology is delivering power levels previously only achievable with Class 4 lasers, but without the associated hazards. Our proprietary optical system allows for high total power output in a safe manner, making it ideal for both home use and medical practices.
